CBD for Overcoming Opioid Addiction

by Erin Galiger

What are you addicted to? If you have ever seen that image of “The Addiction Tree,” you may, like me, have seriously contemplated whether you have an addiction to at least a couple of what is listed. It is evident that our society fosters addictive behaviors and we must be vigilant every day to ward off these tendencies.

Addiction encompasses many forms of expression and there are many origins as to how a person develops an addiction or addictive behavior. The American Society of Addiction Medicine  defines addiction as “a primary-chronic and relapsing brain disease characterized by an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors.” It appears that both too much (manic) or too little (depression) dopamine drives addiction, and that regulating serotonin levels may help to take the edge off the mental pain driving addictions. Substance abuse, specifically opioids, is the primary addiction that is addressed in this article.

Unfortunately, opioid addiction has become a public health crisis, and the number of overdoses each year continues to rise. The leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 50 is now drug overdose. In addition to heroin, legal prescription pain relievers, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, and fentanyl, are included in this class of drugs known as opioids. The National Institute on Drug Abuse explains that opioids are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain and nervous system to produce pleasurable effects and relieve pain,

The New York Times reported that the first governmental account of nationwide drug deaths shows roughly 64,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2016. This increase of deaths is the largest annual jump—almost 20 percent—ever recorded in the U.S., from 52,404 recorded deaths in 2015.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 95 million Americans used prescription painkillers in the past year, not to mention the unrecorded use. Hundreds of millions of prescriptions for opioids are written each year. Four in five new heroin users started out misusing prescription painkillers. From 2015 to 2016, in just one year, heroin deaths rose 23 percent.

There have been a growing number of testimonies from people using CBD to aid in overcoming their opioid addiction and subsequent withdrawal symptoms. In addition to substituting CBD for opioids purely for its pain-relieving properties, CBD users report that it helps relieve their migraines, mood swings, depression, anger and anxiousness caused by withdrawing from opioid use.

To assist those desiring to overcome their opioid addiction, three companion products are carried at Santa Fe’s new CBD shop, Sacred Wellness. These products, two of which contain CBD, were designed to help overcome withdrawal symptoms, such as a drop in serotonin and dopamine levels, support in the healing of the physical body damaged by these substances, and to aid in the metaphysical healing of this state of being that many people surprisingly find themselves. Whether this addiction grabbed a hold of a person after they started using prescription painkillers at parties or after a car accident, more and more people need assistance to shake and heal from this modern plague.

The alcohol extract product Addiction Support assists in relieving anxiety and stress related to drug use, boosting serotonin and dopamine, strengthening the immune system, and restoring the nervous system. Some of the herbs in the formula are known to increase dopamine or serotonin, while having anti-anxiety effects and help with frayed nerves.

The local raw honey and apple cider vinegar blended product Addiction Heal assists in gentle nourishing, cleansing and detoxifying the body and organs from substance abuse, and has relaxing and calming effects. The herbs in this formula provide a gentle detoxification and alcohol alternative to aid in healing and cleansing the organs and systems of the body

The energy blend product “Addiction Resolve,” assists in healing and resolving the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person that influence an addictive behavior. This energy formula works on a person’s energy bodies, and has no chemical constituents, side effects or contraindications.
