Everyone already knows that exercise is the key to health, but why is it so hard to do something that we know is good for us? The number one reason people give for not exercising is, “I don’t have time.” We live in a busy world, and we’re caught up in the thought that exercise needs to be done for a long time for it to be any good. However, just like eating a lot in one meal isn’t enough to starve for a few days, exercising a lot at one time is not the solution to health.

The key word is consistency—and that’s where One Minute Change comes What is One Minute Change? It’s the easiest, fastest and most practical solution to a growing health crisis in America.

According to the 2014 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of Older Adults, a whopping 87 percent of U.S. adults 65 or older have at least one chronic disease. Moreover, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention pegs 38 percent of adults as obese with the rate growing so fast that by 2030, 44 percent—nearly half—of all adults in our country are expected to be obese. We are the most powerful nation in the world and yet our people are among the sickest.

One Minute Change is a movement for individuals to regain their health and is the brainchild of Body & Brain Yoga founder and New York Times Bestselling author, Ilchi Lee. He created One Minute Exercises for the One Minute Change movement as an easy means of practical self-care in a society with an increasing problem of disease.

The premise is just as simple as the exercises—take a one minute break every hour from whatever you’re doing and move your body in an active way. All you need is just one minute every hour to do one high intensity interval training exercise like push-ups, jumping jacks or squats to focus on your body.

A new study conducted by scientists at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, saw that 60 seconds of strenuous exertion proved to be as successful at improving health and fitness as 45 minutes of moderate exercise. One Minute Change is a complete paradigm shift of harmoniously incorporating exercise and self-care into your daily life without having to set extra time aside. There’s also an app available so that participants can easily accomplish One Minute Exercises on a daily basis. The app, which has an alert set for every hour, offers a choice from a series of exercises in four categories: core strengthening, stress relief, weight management, and brain management.

The mission of local Body & Brain Yoga and Tai Chi centers is to help people regain health of body, mind and spirit by incorporating One Minute Exercises with mind-body work. What we need is more practical, accessible, easy and universal ways to learn to take care of ourselves.
