La Montañita Co-op celebrates 40 years!

La Montañita Co-op celebrates 40 years in the Albuquerque community in 2016. As a leader in the local foods movement, the co-op carries over 1,100 local products in their stores. “We believe in the shared benefits of healthy food, sound environmental practices and a strong local economy,” says Lea Quale, La Montañita Co-op Communication Specialist.
As a result of the La Montañita Cooperative Distribution Center, which began in 2007, products from over 350 farmers, ranchers and producers within 300 miles from Albuquerque make it to small community grocers, restaurant and commercial kitchens.
La Montañita Co-op is New Mexico’s largest community-owned natural and organic food market, opening their first store serving just 300 families in 1976 at the corner of Central and Girard. “Since our doors first opened, we’ve added five locations in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Gallup, where we now serve our nearly 17,000 active owners. You do not need to be an owner shop with La Montañita, but owners save more,” explains Quale.
Owners of La Montañita Co-op receive exclusive offers and discounts on many of their favorite items storewide through Owner Deals (super deals that change every two weeks), Volume Discount months in February and October (you can receive 20 percent off your entire purchase on a one-time shopping trip) and a year-end Patronage Dividend. “These are just some of ways our owners save by shopping with us,” says Quale. “By choosing to be an owner you are giving back to your local community through La Montañita Co-op’s support of local small to medium farmers and producers, local non-profits and a continued effort to provide sustainable environmental practices.”
