November 2013 Publisher’s Letter
A shadow was cast upon our Natural Awakenings family last month when we received news of the passing of John R. Voell, co-founder of Natural Awakenings Publishing Corporation. John was one of the reasons I decided to take the leap of faith to become a publisher.
Coming out of the conventional corporate world, I was singularly impressed with the spiritual caliber of this company’s leadership. I said to friends: “They are all like mini gurus.” I remember once when we were in the midst of franchise contract negotiations and I urgently tried to reach John; his assistant calmly replied that he would be unavailable between 4 and 5 p.m., because “he was meditating,” after which he would be happy to return my call. He lived the principles voiced in the magazine.
CEO Sharon Bruckman had the vision 20 years ago to create the original Natural Awakenings community magazine in Southwest Florida because she saw the need to both connect natural health practitioners and provide readers access to alternative therapies and Earth-friendly resources. Five years later, John envisioned and then began spearheading expansion of the franchise throughout Florida, up the East Coast and then westward.
Now 90 publishers strong, we collectively serve more than 3.8 million loyal readers each month. Together, we are building a healthier world, community by community, through sharing and demonstrating local, national and global avenues to natural wellness and planetary well-being. John is one of us who made a difference in the world and we are grateful to have had your example among us.
The theme of gratitude flows through this Thanksgiving issue on Personal Growth and Mindfulness. We are especially glad for author Marianne Williamson’s inspired perspective in her article, “The Miracle of Midlife.” She too lives what she teaches, bringing spiritual principles to bear in her recently announced candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives from California. To help accelerate your own “Fast Track to Personal Growth,” we rundown a wealth of accessible resources in Bess J.M Hochstein’s article on national educational venues, complemented by local resources found. Mentors of all kinds are here to help us kick start and recalibrate our lives to be, as Williamson says, “exactly who we need to be.”
We give thanks to our local contributors BODY, Dragonfly Coaching, Healing Through Horses and Virginia Ellen that all share their own journey and expertise on “Personal Growth” with us.
We invite you now to breathe deeply, think grateful thoughts and enter the holiday season cheerfully and at ease.
To a joyful season of thanksgiving!
