September 2013 Publisher’s Letter
Our September issue is dedicated to fitness. I can’t tell you how much I look forward to your responses each time we announce our monthly theme. I never know who will call, send an email or what local expert will show up. It makes publishing the magazine a creative and organic process.
September is yoga month, an activity that is near and dear to my heart. I have been practicing yoga since I was a teenager. While my girlfriends were out shopping or dating, I was in my bedroom reading Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda or practicing sun salutations and trying out different asanas. I find that yoga is a wonderful way to remain flexible, turn inward and away from our daily routines and release tension in the body. One of my most favorite experiences was a 4-month yoga teacher training I took in Miami. When I was teaching, most students would come to relieve stress or back aches or enjoyed the deep stretches as an offset to their fitness routine. It was great to find my students so relaxed at the end of the class that they were fast asleep and heartily snored away. Hot Yoga seems to be one of the most popular forms of yoga in New Mexico. But there is a form of yoga and studio available for everyone whether you like a relaxing, invigorating, physically challenging, moving or more contemplative type of experience. And most studios will let you try one introductory class. This issue features several local yoga studios. Studios in Santa Fe include Prajna Yoga, Yoga Santa Fe and BODY. Dahn Yoga, Balanced Yoga and Happy Mountain Yoga are based in Albuquerque. I hope you feel inspired to try a class.
As much as I love yoga, it’s important to have a balanced workout routine. Yet, aerobics always has been my Achilles heel. I dread jogging, treadmills and the machines that are popular in most gyms. Thankfully, I discovered the rebounder and now happily bounce around to music. Plus, I will be starting Nia classes soon, as music and dancing make me forget that I am working out. If you have cable TV, go to the “On Demand” fitness channel and enjoy many different types of workouts in your very own living room. I hope you are inspired to get up and move, particularly while we enjoy this wonderful weather.
