April 2013 Publisher’s Letter
This month’s Green Living issue is dedicated to our community and the planet. On April 22, more than one billion people will be honoring Earth Day, making it the largest civic observance of the world.
How can we get involved on this special day? Join Natural Awakenings magazine in celebrating Earth Day organized by La Montanita Coop in Albuquerque. Check out local Earthfest activities. Visit the Albuquerque Garden Center and help raise funds for the services they provide all year round by buying or donating previously owned plants.
Recently, I spoke with members of our community that by the nature of their professions support the environment. Did you know that local architect Vahid Mojarrab in Santa Fe built the first Passive House in New Mexico? A Passive House uses natural energy sources and pays the owner back through up to 90 percent energy savings! How about Michael Melendrez, a local nursery owner whose nursery has survived since the 80’s? He supplies the community with starter kits to grow their own food and has what he calls a “probiotic” for the soil that supports our indigenous plants by being more resistant to drought. Read Audrey Jenkins’ article about three practical ways to conserve water.
As for myself, I gave up my gas-guzzling Acura MDX for a fuel efficient VW Jetta. I recycle using clear plastic bags and bins. My recycling to trash ratio is 3:1. I scan all my paper, recycle the shreds, and no longer use the convenient plastic bags at the grocery store.
Few people realize the environmental impact of glossy magazines. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are often used in their production and emitted as harmful gases. Thankfully, eighty-eight Natural Awakenings magazines across the country are printed on 100 percent recycled paper on un-coated, non-glossy paper using soy ink. Natural Awakenings looks different than a traditional magazine; however, once people read it they love the variety of articles and usually walk away with something they can apply in their own lives. Through Natural Awakenings, they meet the local business owners that supply the services they seek out.
Looking ahead, please join us for the May edition which focuses on Women’s Wellness. We are excited about sponsoring the Albuquerque Film and Media Festival, a one-week celebration that will attract people from all over the country and the world to Albuquerque. Route 66 will be transformed from June 3-9 giving us an opportunity to watch extraordinary films, premieres, participate in the celebrations, and partake in enlightened conversations.
On that note, think about ONE thing you can change to make a difference to your environment and help preserve the planet for the generations to come.
